Some days we have more energy than others. Whether you’re starting to feel sick, or you’re just plain exhausted, it’s never a bad time to add some healthier food to your diet. Smoothies are a great way to sneak in some extra servings of fruits and vegetables. Super food smoothies take things a step further by incorporating natural superfoods into the mix.
Superfoods are simply foods that contain high levels of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need. Below is a list of just a few of these killer smoothie ingredients and their benefits. After a few smoothies with thee ingredients you’ll be grabbing your walking pedometer and logging the miles once again.
- Chia seeds – Chia seeds are packed with protein, and when blended into a smoothie they act as a thickening agent. If you like a thick smoothie that provides plenty of energy, chia is the way to go.
- Kale – Kale is certainly not for everyone, but for those who enjoy it (or those who are brave enough) this leafy green has a lot to offer. It’s been called the healthiest vegetable. Kale is packed with more vitamins and minerals than most of its cousins combined. Blend it with some apples or bananas and you may even like the taste.
- Cacao Powder – Not to be confused with cocoa powder, Cacao is where chocolate comes from, but it’s not exactly chocolate. What it is, is a powerhouse of antioxidants, magnesium, iron and more. Adding a bit of this to a creamy smoothie can boot your immune system and give you some energy too.
- Coconut Oil – While coconuts or their milk may not always be practical for a smoothie, coconut oil can provide many of the benefits in a more manageable package. Coconut Oil contains lauric acid, a known immune protector, and one of the ingredients babies rely on in breast milk.
