Whether you’re hearing it from the media or the First Lady herself, there’s much to talk about when it comes to preventing childhood obesity. Many people believe that it comes from our abundance of technology, while other people are blaming it on the ingredients in food. While both of those could be possible factors, one of the biggest reasons as to why childhood obesity is on the rise is because of fitness education programs being cut in schools’ curriculums. At Pedometers USA, we’re all about bringing back those fitness programs in school and getting our kids healthy, active, and ready to lead fulfilling lives. Here’s why we need these fitness education programs to stay put now more than ever.

Physical Activity is Essential– According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it’s really important for kids to receive up to 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. That’s one hour or more that kids need to be playing, running, walking or playing sports in order to help prevent obesity and other diseases in adulthood. However, the CDC also reports that only 3 out of 10 high school kids receive that recommended amount of physical activity each day, which is more of a reason why these fitness education programs should stay put in school.

17 % of US children are obese– This means that 2.5 million children in the country are considered to be suffering from childhood obesity, according to the CDC. This is children ages 2-19, which a good part of that age group being school-aged children. If more fitness education programs were staying in schools instead of budget cuts, who’s to say that we wouldn’t be helping to prevent our children from suffering from heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes when they’re older?

An obese child has a greater chance of becoming an obese adult– Unfortunately, the CDC also says that if your child is suffering from childhood obesity, they have a great chance of becoming an obese adult. There are many different factors that play into this research finding, such as eating habits, genetics, and hormone problems. However, if we practice healthy physical activity habits, like those in fitness education programs in school, children also have a greater chance of implementing that in their adult lives.

Fruit and Vegetables are also essential– Though the CDC encourages children to become physical, active adults through fitness education programs, nutrition also plays a huge part in childhood obesity as well. According to the CDC, only 25% of children – ages 2-5 – receive their recommend serving of fruits and vegetables a day. Nutrition is not only important to the development of a child, but also important in fueling their physical activity in a sustainable way.

It’s pretty clear how much childhood obesity is affecting our youth, but it’s also just as clear on how we can help to prevent it – through teaching them healthy physical activity and eating habits. Whether it’s at school or at home, it’s clear that fitness education needs to stay put so our kids can have a better future.
